Cabrera surges into Sun City lead
Argentina's Angel Cabrera has fired a sizzling six-under par 64 to move into the lead at the halfway stage of the Sun City Golf Challenge.
The big-hitting President's Cup player combined power and finesse to bring the difficult par-72 Gary Player Country Club to its knees with nine birdies and only one bogey to be at nine-under par 135 after two rounds.
Cabrera holds a two-stroke lead over first round pacesetter Briton Darren Clarke who carded a two-under 70 to go with his first round 67.
America's Jim Furyk and Briton Luke Donald were a further shot behind.
Australian Adam Scott improved on his opening round 72 to fire a three-under par round of 69 to be six shots off the pace.
Cabrera hit some of the biggest drives ever seen at the course, but it was his putter that did the damage for halves of 33 followed by a stunning 31.
On the par-four first he holed a curling 12-footer for birdie and followed up with a 15-foot birdie on the par-five second. On the par-four fifth he added another birdie from six feet having bogeyed the par-three fourth.
From the ninth Cabrera made six birdies in the next seven holes including four in row around the turn.
On the signature 596-yard par-five ninth, the Argentine needed only a nine-iron for his second shot to reach the intimidating island green.
On a course that measures nearly 8,000 yards Cabrera never used more than a six iron for any approach shot.
