Fear factor one win away: Jones
Wallaby coach Eddie Jones believes a first up win against France will give Australia back its "fear factor" as the team seeks to avoid the ignominy of a sixth consecutive Test defeat on its tour of Europe.
A squad of 31, including eight uncapped players, left Sydney on Wednesday for a campaign which will pit third-ranked Australia against France (4th), England (6th), Ireland (7th) and Six Nations champion Wales (5th) on successive November weekends.
After a winless Tri Nations campaign the Australians must defeat the French in Marseilles on November 5 to avoid becoming the first Wallaby team since 1968/69 to lose half a dozen consecutive games.
Jones was acutely aware of the importance of a first-up Test win in Europe and the chance to regain some respect.
"You don't have a fear factor when you lose games and if we win the first game, we will have the fear factor back," he said.
While New Zealand will undertake a classic grand slam tour of the UK, the Wallabies appear to have a tougher campaign against the four highest-ranked northern hemisphere nations.
"It's a good tour for us, it's just what we need to have," Jones said.
"We've come off a disappointing season, we've got to play the best sides in the northern hemisphere, which gives us a chance to move forward as a team."
Included amongst the smattering of newcomers are three players - No.8 Leroy Houston, 18; hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, 20; and winger Digby Ione, 20 - who have not played a single Super 12 game between them and form part of the biggest coterie of rookies injected into a Wallaby squad in recent memory.
The big game for those three may be the tour opener in Bordeaux on November 1 when Australia A meets the French Barbarians.
