Qld Rugby denies Jones is to be sacked
The Queensland Rugby Union has described as "mischievous and wrong" a report claiming Reds coach Eddie Jones would be sacked or resign on Wednesday.
QRU chief executive Ken Freer angrily denied the report on Fairfax websites that Jones, who has steered the Reds to just one win in eight Super 14 matches this season, would be forced out.
"There is no intention to sack Eddie," Freer said.
"As our Chairman Peter Lewis said as recently as yesterday, Eddie has a three year contract with us and we want him to continue in the job.
"And I can't say it any plainer than that.
"I will not comment further on this rumour."
Fairfax websites had reported that the QRU would hold a media conference on Wednesday to make an announcement about Jones' future.
Jones told the website he was aware "of a number of rumours" about his future.
"It is only a contract, they can give me notice or I could give them notice," he said.
"I will be making a decision in the next two weeks about which side I will be coaching next year."
Questioned about whether he would wait until after the Reds' next Super 14 game on April 7 - Jones said: "It might be sooner than that."
"If they don't want me I won't be sticking around."
Reds' general manager Alex Pope denied Jones' job was on the line but an unnamed source quoted by the websites said that he must go.
Queensland has struggled this season with a raft of injuries and sit last on the Super 14 ladder.
