Eight new faces in Wallaby tour squad
Australian rugby's Generation Next was unveiled, with eight uncapped players for the coming tour of France and the United Kingdom representing the biggest infusion of new blood for the Wallabies in recent memory.
Comprising over a quarter of the squad of 31, the six uncapped forwards and two new backs will vie for positions on a tour featuring Tests against France, England, Ireland and Wales.
New Super 14 franchise Western Force had the second highest representation, with seven players, behind NSW with 12 and just ahead of ACT and Queensland, six each.
A total of 14 players with 412 Test caps were not considered as they were either rested, injured or suspended.
Three of the newcomers, flanker Digby Houston, 18, and hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, 20 - both of NSW - and Western Force winger Digby Ioane, 20, have not even played a Super 12 game.
Also included for the first time were Force outside back Cameron Shepherd, 21, ACT lock/back rower Adam Wallace-Harrison, 26, and three other uncapped forwards who have trained with the Wallabies this season - No.8 Scott Fava, 29, his Western Force teammate and prop, David Fitter, 28, and Queensland prop Greg Holmes, 22.
"We've said to all the guys they are not there to just develop on tour, they are there to get in the test 22," Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said.
"I hope all of them have got on a piece of paper tucked away somewhere that their goal for the tour is to make the 22. They have all got the ability to do it, they are all good young players with plenty of potential."
While Jones said the tour would provide opportunities for the uncapped players, he stressed results rather than experimentation was still the top priority for the Wallabies, who lost their last five Tests.
"It's important we get results on the tour. We're a side that's results lately haven't been good," Jones said.
