Cousins hot favourite for Brownlow Medal
West Coast captain Ben Cousins is the clear favourite to kick off a huge week for the Eagles by winning the AFL's most prized individual award - the Brownlow Medal - on Monday night.
Cousins, who is tipped to poll extremely well in the first half of the season, when the Eagles were dominating the competition, will not attend the count at Melbourne's Crown Palladium.
Instead, he and several other Eagles will attend a club function at Perth's Burswood Casino, while watching the count via a video link.
At least last year's winner, team-mate Chris Judd, will be on hand to present him with the medal, should he be successful.
If he wins, he would the have the chance to achieve the rare distinction of a Brownlow Medal and leading a premiership side in the space of five days, with the Eagles taking on Sydney in the grand final at the MCG on Saturday.
Cousins' status as a high possession-winning midfielder in a successful team with a proven history of polling votes will stand him in good stead.
But the second favourite, Western Bulldogs veteran midfielder Scott West, also has a strong history in the Brownlow, having finished second, third and fourth on previous occasions.
The popular and consistent Bulldog has had arguably his best-ever year and was pivotal to the Dogs' late-season charge, which took them to the brink of a finals berth.
Judd, who tipped Cousins to succeed him as the league's best and fairest, said his skipper was likely to charge to the lead early in the count.
"It's probably easy to forget what happened at the start of the season when you think about awards like Brownlows," Judd said.
