Cyclists make remarkable recoveries
Two of the Australian cyclists seriously injured in a road accident in Germany last week have surprised doctors with their recoveries - one sitting up and talking and the other expected to undergo more surgery on Tuesday.
South Australian Alexis Rhodes and Tasmanian Louise Yaxley were hurt in the accident caused by an out-of-control teenage driver which killed their teammate Amy Gillett, 29, and injured three others.
Rhodes, 20, regained consciousness in intensive care on Sunday and on Monday was sitting up in bed as she chatted to her family and friends.
"They are doing surprisingly well. They no longer need assistance to breathe and they are talking," said Professor Gernot Marx from Jena University hospital in Germany.
Australian Institute of Sport director Professor Peter Fricker said doctors would decide within days whether Rhodes could be transferred to a general ward.
"She's quite alert and chatty and is being cheeky, which is good," Prof Fricker said.
"In a day or so the doctors will assess whether she can be transferred to a general ward but all the indications are positive.
"Doctors won't put a timeframe on her release at this stage but they are pleased there are no signs of neurological damage.
"She has been kicking her legs up and down and carrying out passive movements as requested by the doctors."
Yaxley, 23, regained consciousness on Saturday and is expected to undergo further surgery on her arms and one leg on Tuesday.
