Ogilvy charges home for fifth at Open
Australia's Geoff Ogilvy has raced home in the back nine of the final round at the British Open to finish tied for fifth.
Ogilvy birdied three of the last four holes to card a final round 69 for a tournament total of 281, seven shots behind winner Tiger Woods.
His 71-74-67-69 put him in good company on seven-under, alongside Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Michael Campbell and Retief Goosen.
It also earned him a cheque for STG122,167 ($A286,642).
Nick O'Hern and Mark Hensby were the next best Australians on five-under to finish tied for 15th, while 21-year-old Nick Flanagan made a significant breakthrough in his career to finish on four-under in a share of 23rd place.
Richard Green ended up on three-under in a tie for 32nd with Sandy Lyle after a one-over-par 73.
Ogilvy, 28, started his final round poorly with three bogeys in the first six holes, but knocked in six birdies after that, including his run at 15, 17 and 18.
He was one of the few players all week to birdie the par-four Road Hole 17th, landing an eight-metre putt following a poor tee shot into the rough.
The South Australian was lucky to make the cut in the first place, scraping in on the cut-off mark of one-over-par.
"The first two days I didn't play very well," Ogilvy said.
