Eels pull off another miracle win
Parramatta coach Brian Smith may want to look up the word "impossible" in the dictionary after his team pulled off its second consecutive miracle victory, coming from behind to pip North Queensland 24-22.
The Eels trailed 22-6 in the 60th minute but stormed home with tries to centres Ashley Graham and David Vaealiki and fullback Brett Hodgson to level the scores at 22-all with less than four minutes on the clock.
Halfback Michael Witt then calmly slotted a sideline conversion to put the Eels in front by two points and they held on grimly to record a vital win in front of more than 9,000 screaming fans at Parramatta Stadium.
Last Saturday night it was at the same ground where the Eels came up with their opening Houdini act - scoring three tries in the final 10 minutes against the New Zealand Warriors to turn a 26-12 deficit into a 28-26 triumph.
"I don't know what impossible is anymore," said Smith following the win.
"They hang in there. I think the opposition were like the rest of us, they thought it couldn't happen and then when it started to happen they couldn't believe it.
"There was no luck about it. It wasn't because of any lucky bounce, if anything the lucky bounces went against us."
Smith was referring to Cowboys lock Glenn Morrison, whose try in the 46th minute put the visitors 18-0 ahead after they had led 12-0 at halftime.
Halfback Chris Sheppard kicked from 35m out and the ball took a wicked bounce for Hodgson as it hit the crossbar and landed perfectly for Morrison to score under the posts.
Dean Widders gave the Eels some hope with a 52nd minute try but when Cowboys fullback Ty Williams kicked ahead and scooped up the ball to set up winger Aaron Morgan with 20 minutes remaining, the home side looked dead and buried.
