All Blacks down Wallabies 16-7

A relentless New Zealand has secured consecutive Bledisloe Cups after a 16-7 win over Australia in atrocious conditions at Westpac Stadium.

In driving rain and swirling winds the Wallabies defended to a standstill but came up short as the All Blacks did the damage with 80 per cent of the ball, some epic forward play and a steely resolve to make up for last year's World Cup debacle.

The clash of the two pre-eminent rugby teams of the year lived up to its titanic billing, the pair playing at pace and with more than respectable ball security given the big wet.

But with a mountain of possession the All Blacks were almost always in control even as the match finished at a try apiece.

A try to New Zealand winger Doug Howlett looked to have sealed the match for the New Zealanders who took a 13-0 lead 22 minutes into the second half.

The game was brought back to life however when Australia entered All Blacks territory for the first time in the half, Stirling Mortlock rewarded almost immediately with a try in the 71st minute.

Centre partner Matt Giteau had struck a spiralling kick with All Blacks winger Joe Rokocoko under seemingly no pressure but the slippery conditions and the heat of the moment got to the flyer as Mortlock slid onto the ball from three metres out to score.

New Zealand however did not buckle, a 79th minute penalty goal to centre Daniel Carter sealing the result.

While quietly seething over the performance of referee Alain Rolland, Wallabies coach Eddie Jones conceded the better team had won.

"I'm not happy at all, we didn't play well," Jones said.
