Muscat in doubt for A-League clash
The rubberbands holding together injury-racked Melbourne Victory skipper Kevin Muscat finally snapped and he looks set to miss his side's A-League grand final rematch in Adelaide on Friday night.
Muscat, who has been playing matches this season despite a broken arm and an injured knee, received another knock to his troublesome knee during a training match.
He limped out of training, and according to Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick, probably out of an already weakened Victory squad to play the Reds at Hindmarsh Stadium.
"We'll have to see how he is tomorrow, but according to our physio he's not looking too good for the game," Merrick said.
"The initial impression is he won't be available for the Adelaide game.
"He's being treated as we speak ... at this stage he's not looking good."
Even though Muscat has played injured all season, the 34-year-old has managed to provide his usual strong-arm presence in midfield.
His likely demise this week leaves the Victory vastly understrength in midfield going into the clash with the Reds.
The Victory are already be without Grant Brebner through suspension and Leigh Broxham with a groin injury, while luckless central defender Daniel Piorkowski will undergo shoulder surgery on Friday and will miss most of the season.
But former Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic survived training and is looming as a chance to play only his second A-League match of the season following a knee injury early in the Victory's round one game.
Milicevic could well find himself drafted into a holding midfield role, while the versatile Steve Pantelidis is another option for Merrick.
Whichever of the pair doesn't play in the engine room will probably fill Piorkowski's spot in defence.
Adelaide will also be understrength, and are expected to be without the A-League's leading scorer Bruce Djite for the next six weeks.
Scans revealed Djite has torn ligaments in his right ankle.
They will also be missing Olyroos Nathan Burns and Kristian Sarkies, who are away at the Australian under-23 training camp ahead of their Olympic Games qualifier against Lebanon in Beirut next week.
Meanwhile, Football Federation Australia is still investigating crowd disturbances at the Victory's clash with Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium last Saturday night.
Sydney FC fans threw bottles at referee Mark Shield following the match, while Victory supporters were accused of damaging seats at the stadium.
