Senators get free rugby ride
Australia's senators appear to be as enthusiastic about the game of rugby as the rest of Australia.
But unlike the rest of Australia, not that many appear to have actually paid for tickets to World Cup rugby matches.
The latest register of senators' pecuniary interests reveal an astonishing number scored free tickets plus, in some cases, corporate hospitality courtesy of various companies and organisations.
Sports Minister Rod Kemp made it to four games including the opening and the grand final, courtesy of "Rugby Australia" (sic).
Senator Kemp had tickets to spare and handed them on to colleagues including WA Liberal Senator David Johnston and Queensland Liberal Brett Mason who represented him at some matches.
Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald reported receiving tickets to rugby matches in Townsville and Brisbane thanks to the International Rugby Board and BAE Systems.
Finance minister received tickets and hospitality at one match thanks to JP Morgan and he made it to the grand final courtesy of ABN Amro.
NSW Liberal Senator Marise Payne scored tickets to three matches thanks to AMP, Optus and the Australian Rugby Union. NT Senator Nigel Scullion made it to Canberra for one match, thanks to "World Rugby" (sic).
Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz reported receiving that six tickets to a World Cup rugby match played at Launceston on October 30. The tickets, each worth $35, came courtesy of the Ambassador of Romania.
Senate president Paul Calvert managed a complementary ticket plus corporate hospitality at the grand final courtesy of the chairman of the company Diageo Plc.
