Essendon confident of Hird's return
Essendon is confident James Hird will return for Saturday's AFL match against Carlton.
According to a report on the club's website, Hird had no problems with a skills and fitness sessions on Monday morning.
He has missed the last five matches with a calf muscle injury and will retire at the end of the season.
Young ruckman Justin Laycock is also set to be available, despite the corked calf he suffered in Sunday's 63-point loss to Fremantle.
The Bombers are 13th after the Dockers loss and unlikely to make the finals.
