Socceroos try to keep Asian Cup alive
Amid claims of internal unrest and a supporters' website agitating to get the coach sacked, the Socceroos try to save their drowning Asian Cup campaign in a must-win clash with Thailand on Monday night.
Co-hosts Thailand, in the form of their lives and with an estimated 40,000-strong crowd ready to turn out at Rajamangala Stadium to cheer them on, can send pre-tournament favourites Australia home just by snatching a draw in the final group match.
The Socceroos will need to do something they haven't done at this tournament to date to progress to the quarter-finals - win.
They also must hope Iraq get at least a draw in the other Group A clash with Oman being played simultaneously at Supachalasai Stadium to secure a passage to the knockout stage.
That combination of results will put Australia through to the quarter-finals in second place in Group A ahead of the Thais on a head-to-head countback.
But the picture gets tricky if Oman beat Iraq and the Socceroos win, meaning all four teams will be tied on four points and goal difference will come into play to decide the top two nations in the group.
Coach Graham Arnold, who is under pressure from a website acting as an online petition to have him fired, has flagged "a couple of changes" to the starting line-up against the Thais.
Australia will be forced to replace defender Lucas Neill, who is suspended for his last-gasp send-off for dissent against Iraq.
Striker Archie Thompson is also under an injury cloud after taking a knock on the knee during training.
The Thais, with a win and a draw in their two matches, also have the added spur of remaining in Bangkok for their quarter-final should they top Group A.
The Socceroos have also been forced to deny newspaper reports of a rift among the players during the disappointing campaign so far.
Australia opened the Asian Cup with a lucky 1-1 draw with Oman, and followed that up with a woeful 3-1 loss to Iraq on Friday night to leave their tournament hanging by a thread.
