Crows smother Roos to win by 46 points
Adelaide forward Scott Welsh booted five goals as the Crows crushed the in-form Kangaroos by 46 points in their AFL clash at Carrara.
The Crows will head into the second half of the season brimming with confidence after defeating a team that had won seven of its past eight matches coming into round 12.
The relentless Crows restricted the Shinboners to just seven goals with smothering defence in their impressive 15.10.100 to 7.12.54 victory in front of 11,178 fans.
Nathan Bock landed four majors while teammate Welsh jagged four in the final quarter as the Crows improved their win-loss record to 7-5 halfway through the season.
The `Roos were denied a clean sweep in their three matches at Gold Coast Stadium this year after beating Brisbane and Carlton earlier this season.
Adelaide have been criticised for lack of potency in attack this year after averaging just 11 goals per game.
But they had no problems unleashing their artillery on the 'Roos, who never looked like hauling in the Crows in a disappointing performance and were simply terrible in front of goal.
Shannon Grant in particular was wayward, missing two sitters when his team needed someone to step up and take control.
Adelaide raced to a 22-point lead at quarter-time, with Bock bagging two majors after Scott Thompson and Ken McGregor had kicked the opening goals.
Kangaroos dynamo Lindsay Thomas took a superb mark to kick his side's only major for the quarter.
The Crows increased their lead to 27 points at halftime as they restricted the opposition to just two goals - to Leigh Brown and Grant.
The third quarter was a dour struggle as Crows skipper Mark Ricciuto and 'Roos forward Corey Jones kicked the only goals.
Adelaide went to the last break leading 9.7.61 to 4.9.33 and were never threatened in the final quarter as Welsh cut loose.
The Roos were missing the creativity of injured midfielder Daniel Wells (knee), with Andrew McLeod playing all over his replacement Eddie Sansbury.
Talented midfielder Simon Goodwin (knee) was absent from the Crows outfit, replaced by Luke Jericho.
Crows coach Neil Craig described the victory as "fantastic" in light of the quality of the opposition and the attacking flair that's been previously missing from his team mixed with its rugged defence.
"To hold the Kangaroos to just seven goals when you consider their scoring potential throughout the year says a lot about our defence on the night and being able to add attack to that is the bonus for us," Craig said.
"It's a fantastic win for us."
But Craig fell short of promising the new attacking style of football was here to stay for the second half of the season.
"If we can get some consistency with it, I'll be convinced it's maybe cemented in," he said.
"It's a one-off at the moment."
Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley said his players had shied away from their ruthless and "uncompromising" brand of football that has been their trademark this season.
"We weren't uncompromising tonight and we've been that in a lot of games we've played for a long time," he noted.
"But unfortunately we had a lot of players who probably fell short of that benchmark."
Asked whether he was pleased with his team's progress at the halfway point of the season, Laidley replied: "We're not happy.
"You're only as happy as your last effort and our last effort wasn't good enough.
"I've made it pretty black and white for the boys. They understand that that wasn't acceptable tonight."
Laidley revealed he had pushed for Wells to play against the Crows but the club doctor had erred on the side of caution.
Wells is almost certain to be available for the Roos next clash - Glenn Archer's 300th senior game - against Western Bulldogs at the MCG on July 1.
