Nonu finds his happy place
After a tumultuous Super Rugby season which eventually had him jettisoned by the Hurricanes, the smile has returned to Ma'a Nonu's face.
The big centre, who plays his 58th Test against South Africa on Saturday, has emerged from the gloom that seemed to follow him around this year and he attributes the All Blacks culture for his shift in outlook.
"The best thing about this environment is you always work hard to make this team but when you're in here it's a family, the coaches really bring you in," Nonu said.
But despite the blockbusting 29-year-old getting his mojo back, he is aware of the stiff competition for the All Blacks' No.12 jersey from the likes of Sonny Bill Williams.
"No-one owns the jersey, I've always said you just wear it. So when you get the chance to wear you just do the best you can.
"I'm still learning, hopefully I'm still improving. The last thing I want to do is go backwards," he said.
Nonu, who will be playing for the Blues in next year's Super 15 competition, was conscious of the added pressure especially in a World Cup year.
"You just want to play your best, but one mistake could cost you your spot."
He combines with former Hurricanes teammate Conrad Smith in the midfield for a record-equalling 28th time, levelling the mark held by North Harbour partnership Walter Little and Frank Bunce.
"We've played together a long time and we've had some good times and hopefully they can continue," Nonu said.
