NSW league boss bemused by Meninga's rant

NSW Rugby League general manager Geoff Carr has labelled Mal Meninga's astonishing attack on the Blues administration as "weird" after the Queensland coach claimed they tried to undermine his Maroons State of Origin team.

The coach who guided Queensland to their sixth-straight series victory last Wednesday night, claimed "faceless men of influence" within the game had decided the Maroons success was "detrimental to the health of the game."

Meninga also claimed there were discrepancies in judiciary rulings throughout the series, and personal attacks on his coaching style were part of a "malicious" smear campaign by the NSW media.

Carr said he was bemused by the claims, and that no-one within NSW had ever questioned the brilliance of Meninga's team, but didn't believe the NRL judiciary was against his side.

"Mal Meninga has been a genius at short-term team preparation, building cultures and having people coming through his systems in such a way that they have won six in a row ... and he should be congratulated for it," Carr told AAP.

"But to infer that there is some huge conspiracy against him and the team through the judiciary is weird to say the least."

QRL boss Ross Livermore backed Meninga and said he had no issue with him launching his broadside and accused the NSW media of deliberately targeting the 51-year-old.

"He's genuinely cut up about it and has issues out about it," Livermore told AAP.

"I'll have a talk to him when we do our Origin briefing but I don't have a problem with what he's said.

"If you give it, you've got to take it and I think that's where Mal is coming from.

"It was a column that cut straight to the bone but I think he's been cut to the bone in a few things that have been said about him, especially his coaching ability."

Carr said Meninga should accept criticism from the media as being part of his job and that the boot is often on the other foot.

"I think he has overplayed this," he said.

"This time last year the NSW media wanted everybody sacked - coaches, players, selectors - they really ripped into the NSWRL and everyone associated with it.

"This year to their credit they got behind their team and have obviously written a few things that have got under Mal's skin.

"It is the same as when the Courier Mail (newspaper) and the Queensland media write things that get under the skin of NSW people.

"But that is part and parcel of the biggest sporting event of the year, to consider that someone may have orchestrated all that involving the judiciary is quite weird."

Meninga also criticised NSW captain Paul Gallen for blaming referees instead of giving credit to a superior team, but Carr said the Cronulla skipper was prevented from saluting his opponents because of the hostile home supporters.

"We know Queenslanders love this mentality of everyone is against them and everyone hates them and maybe Mal is trying to build on that," Carr said.

"They should try and spare a thought for Paul Gallen, he was up there trying to be gracious in support of the Queensland team but was drowned out by the boos from the crowd."

Match review committee chairman Greg McCullum said he would take legal advice over Meninga's comments about the judiciary.

"I'm aware of some of the innuendo that's in the comments that have been made, I haven't read it myself yet, but I'll be referring the issue to the NRL, the ARL and to the people that give me legal advice," he told AAP.

"That's all I'm prepared to say at the moment because I haven't read the article myself but people whose opinions I respect and respect me have indicated what was in it."
