Big week looms for Queensland footy fans
The game they play in heaven has muscled into Saint Darren's State of Origin farewell with Queensland on edge for two Suncorp Stadium deciders in four days this week.
Super Rugby's resurgent Reds have ensured rugby league's Maroons and retiring skipper Darren Lockyer won't get all the attention ahead of Wednesday night's game three.
The Reds' pulsating 30-13 semi-final victory over Auckland's Blues on Saturday night booked a first grand final appearance against the Crusaders.
It also ensured there will be three Suncorp Stadium crowd-pullers in eight days - making it one of the biggest weeks of sport in Queensland's history.
The Reds victory even had New Zealand news websites calling Queensland "the centre of the oval-ball universe."
If the Maroons and Reds both triumph they will join A-League soccer premiers Brisbane Roar and netball's Queensland Firebirds as champions.
"It's a big week for Queensland and we're going to enjoy the week," said Reds coach Ewen McKenzie, who admitted his reborn team still had some way to go to gain credibility after many seasons in the doldrums.
"We're inching our way forward. If you hold up a trophy that's the best statement, but we haven't done that yet."
It will be a fairytale finish for one of the two teams as the Reds were the laughing stocks of the competition just two seasons ago while the nomadic Crusaders have been forced to play away from home all year due to February's devastating earthquake.
