Broncos drop McCullough, Hunt
Rookie coach Anthony Griffin sent a strong message to his players after dumping promising Brisbane youngsters Andrew McCullough and Ben Hunt from Friday night's NRL clash with South Sydney in Perth for disciplinary reasons.
The two 21 year olds will instead turn out for their affiliate clubs in the Queensland Cup at the weekend after both were charged by police with being a public nuisance in the early hours of Saturday morning.
They'd earlier been refused entry to two Brisbane city hotels before they were approached by police.
"They won't be playing for the Broncos at the weekend," a disappointed Griffin told AAP on Monday.
"They've been stood down and they'll go back to their affiliate clubs and play Queensland Cup at the weekend."
Police reportedly approached McCullough and Hunt after security staff had refused them entry to both the Victory and nearby Stock Exchange hotels.
They were issued with on-the-spot fines after attempting to gain entry to another drinking establishment - Friday's - on the Brisbane River.
McCullough had been a strong contributor in Brisbane's 21-14 upset win over St George Illawarra at Suncorp Stadium with 41 tackles a few hours before his indiscretion.
"They put themselves in a bad position," said Griffin, who had so far been spared such difficult decisions in his first year at the helm.
"They didn't do a great deal wrong that any other 21 year old would do.
"But they're professional footballers and they play for our club and that makes it different, like it or not."
The players, both in Griffin's extended squad to fly to Perth on Wednesday, will also do some community work with the homeless as part of their penalty.
While not concerned about any drinking issues, Griffin said the players had to understand and accept their responsibilities to the club.
"We've spoken to both players who've been tremendous this season with their work in the community, who erred on Saturday night," he said.
"It's not something we think is going to be a long-term issue with either of them.
"It wouldn't matter who it is, we're not going to tolerate poor decisions and players who put themselves in those positions.
"It was a relatively minor offence but they've let themselves down, their teammates down and their club down."
Fortunately Griffin has three stars - Justin Hodges, Matt Gillett and Corey Parker - returning from injury although he said that would not have changed his actions in dropping Hunt and McCullough.
The game in Perth, one of the areas under consideration for the NRL's expansion, features the clash of class centres Hodges and Greg Inglis (Souths) who went close to signing with Brisbane earlier this season.
"They're a couple of fair players, it would be worth the price of admission alone," said Griffin.
