Test hopes a winner for Warriors
The Warriors are hopeful the lure of New Zealand Test jerseys will fire up their NRL side when they challenge Penrith at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday.
The Warriors will be out to claim their fourth victory in five matches, buoyed by a season-best performance against Melbourne on Anzac Day.
The brave 18-14 win over the Storm leaves the Warriors just outside the top eight but "hungry" to back it up with another victory against the beleaguered Panthers, the team's assistant coach Tony Iro said on Thursday.
Iro believes the lure of the upcoming Anzac Test against Australia on the Gold Coast was a key factor in his side's impressive play on Monday.
"There was that lure of a Test match coming up, so who better to impress than against probably the best side in the comp?" he said of the Storm upset.
Iro, who is also an assistant for the Kiwis, is hoping that same draw card will produce more winning performances in this Sunday's game, which finishes just hours before the selectors announce the Test squad.
"There are a couple on this side with an opportunity to press for selection," said Iro.
"We are hoping we will use this as a motivation to force their way onto the plane on Sunday night."
The assistant was happy to talk up his side's efforts against the Storm, saying "it was certainly our most complete performance".
"We got the little things right," Iro explained.
"We have worked on a lot of stuff at training for the last few weeks and just haven't been able to put it into practice.
"I thought from the back three right through to our forwards, they all did their job. Our kicking game was a lot better than it has been and we just gave ourselves opportunity to win it and we held on."
Off the high of the surprise win, Iro said the Warriors will need to take a different approach this week.
"Melbourne was a game most people other than the guys here didn't expect us to win," Iro said.
"There is probably more expectation on us this week. We want to build some consistency in our game and winning at home is really important in this competition."
With just two wins to their name this season and turmoil surrounding the future of their coach Matthew Elliott, Penrith is down but certainly not out.
"A couple of weeks ago if a couple of things had gone their way they could have beaten the Storm themselves," Iro warned.
"They are a dangerous side. They towelled us here last year. Obviously with the dramas they have had with the coach during the week, that's probably going to galvanise them a wee bit. So we are under no illusions as to what we are up against."
