Revenge still on Reds' mind
It seems a hoodoo-breaking win over the NSW Waratahs has not satisfied a resurgent Queensland Reds' taste for revenge.
Still buzzing from a rare victory over their arch-rivals, the Reds will again have payback on their mind in Saturday's Super Rugby clash with the Hurricanes in Wellington.
Last year the Reds were also within sight of a first finals berth since 2001 when they arrived in Wellington - but left with their season in tatters following a remarkable capitulation.
The Reds led 21-13 at the break but incredibly conceded 31 unanswered second-half points to ensure their 2010 finals hopes relied on other results.
History shows the Reds finished fifth last year, falling agonisingly short of breaking their playoff drought.
But Queensland have made a habit of breaking curses under coach Ewen McKenzie - just ask the Waratahs.
And in a major worry for the Hurricanes, Genia said they still had "more boxes to tick" despite still savouring their win over NSW.
"To break that hoodoo, it's not hard to stay up. That mood is still well and truly alive in the camp," said Genia, who will mark his 50th game for Queensland this weekend.
"(But) we have a few more boxes we want to tick.
"Thinking back to last year (against the Hurricanes) we did well for the first half then we allowed them back into the game.
"They won on the back of our mistakes. Hopefully we can rectify that this weekend."
The Hurricanes sit on the bottom of the New Zealand conference and 13th overall ahead of just the Cheetahs and Lions.
And this week they added All Blacks Ma'a Nonu (eye) and Cory Jane (hamstring) to an injury list that has now claimed seven players.
But Genia was not taking the six-time finalists lightly before the Reds flew out for Wellington on Thursday night.
Especially with the Reds suffering injuries of their own.
Props James Slipper (collarbone) and Ben Daley (nose) are out of the Hurricanes clash along with gamebreaker Digby Ioane (facial fracture).
And winger Rod Davies (knee) is gone for two months.
McKenzie will finalise his team on Thursday, but Genia let slip the forward options the Reds coach was considering.
"They are a quality side (Hurricanes) and are due for a win," Genia said.
"We want to make sure we are not that side that gives them that.
"We have a few injured but the great thing that Ewen has done is create a lot of depth in key positions.
"We have got guys like Guy Shepherdson coming in and Greg Holmes who is a Wallabies prop so we are not doing so badly.
"(But) it is always hard to win in New Zealand."
Genia backed former Melbourne Storm flyer Will Chambers to help fill the void left by Ioane and Davies.
