Sims family set for big night out
Prince William is not the only special guest on the Cowboys' invite list with the NRL club flying Peter and Jacqueline Sims to Townsville to watch their three sons play at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.
While the Cowboys are still waiting to hear if Prince William - who'll be in the region talking to victims of cyclone Yasi - will accept an invitation to attend the NRL game, Peter and Jacqueline will be in the crowd when sons Ashton, Tariq and Korbin take to the field.
Ashton, 26, who has played well over 100 NRL games with the Dragons and Broncos, will play alongside 21-year-old brother Tariq, who makes his NRL debut against Newcastle.
Their kid brother Korbin, who only turned 19 in January and has played Australian Schoolboys, will turn out for the Knights in the Toyota Cup.
Tariq and Korbin both have big raps on them, just as Ashton did when he arrived on the NRL scene for the Dragons in round three, 2005.
"To make my debut playing alongside my brother (Ashton), words can't describe how I'm feeling right now," said Tariq.
"Growing up, I joked about playing with him or against him, it was always a goal of mine.
"My emotions are going to be pretty high. I'm always pretty intense with my football ... I'm very passionate about it."
His emotions will be even higher knowing the club is bringing his parents from Gerringong in NSW to watch him make his debut.
Recent changes allow clubs to spend money on special occasions such as debuts and player milestones without it being counted under the salary cap.
"It just so happens that our little brother (Korbin) is going to be up as well. He's playing for the Knights under-20s," he said.
"It will be a thrill for mum and dad and for all our family to be back together and have a family weekend again."
Tariq has built up considerably since arriving at the Cowboys and big things are expected from him once he adjusts to playing alongside the likes of Matt Scott,Johnathan Thurston and Matty Bowen.
"All the boys are pumped for me that I'm making my debut this weekend," he said.
"Looking at the calibre of the players who are there, I think the only way is up for this club.
"I'm going to try my hardest to be part of that."
Winger Ashley Graham will celebrate his 100th game for the club after making his debut with Parramatta in 2002.
Coach Neil Henry will be hoping the 26-year-old Graham repeats his effort against Brisbane last week in his milestone game.
"I told him I hadn't seen him play a game like that at my time at the club after he took some pressure off some of our big men with some outstanding carries in the middle," Henry said after their 16-14 win.
