More delays face Knights' Tinkler decision
Newcastle supporters may be forced to wait even longer to decide the fate of their club after the NRL club's board of directors held a drawn-out meeting on Thursday evening.
Newcastle received an offer from the Tinkler Sports Group to privatise the club last week as the already drawn out process appeared to edge closer to its conclusion.
It was expected that the board would move swiftly today to ratify the documents required to call an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) for March 30th, but chief executive Steve Burraston believes that time frame is now unlikely.
"We always said we'd call a members meeting when we had a completed document," Burraston said prior to the club's season launch.
"We do have a completed document now and we will be putting a member memorandum together to go out in the next couple of days.
"It's likely that (the meeting) won't be the 30th now because by the time we get that drafted, printed and sent, it may be the 31st or soon after.
"We would like to get it done, from our point of view, before our first home game.
"As soon as we can get it out there we'll get the meeting happening, and I think the important thing is now that members will get the opportunity to go through that document to take what advice they need.
"The good thing for this organisation is that no matter what decision the members make, we'll be in a good position."
Having to give members 21 days notice, the Knights' board must announce the EGM before the end of next week in order to hold the meeting prior to the team's first home game of the NRL season against St George Illawarra on April 3.
After experiencing numerous delays and withdrawn offers prior to this latest setback, Burraston believes the board will have had the appropriate time to make an informed decision.
"It's good that they understand the document, and they've got to do that, it's their duty as board members to understand the document totally and to take it away from here and take external advice as well," he explained.
"They're actually going through page-by-page, line-by-line and getting a good understanding from the lawyers what each clause means.
"We've always said we'll never rush this decision, it's the most important decision that the club will ever make, and we've got to give the board every opportunity, and the members every opportunity, to have all the information necessary."
