Roosters kick off 2011 with a win
Luckless forward Anthony Cherrington made an impressive return from injury as the NRL grand finalists Sydney Roosters ground out a 22-12 trial win against the Ipswich Jets on Saturday night.
Lining up in a largely second-string side, Cherrington relished the opportunity to test his reconstructed right knee as his club began their pre-season hit-outs at North Ipswich Oval.
It was almost 12 months ago when the former Junior Kiwis second rower ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the Roosters final 2010 trail against Parramatta.
Anthony Minichiello, Daniel Conn, Mose Masoe and Joseph Leilua were the only players from the grand final team beaten by St George Illawarra to turn out against the Queensland Cup team who were willing in front of a vocal home crowd of 4,500.
Played over four quarters in hot and humid conditions, both sides traded a converted try apiece over the first two quarters for the scores to be locked at 12-all at half-time.
The Roosters superior fitness got them home in the second half as Ethan Lowe crossed in the third quarter and winger Steve Naughton sealed the result in near the end.
Young playmaker Riley Jacks showed good touches at halfback while Leilua finished with a a try and two first-half conversions.
