Akermanis signs with Tassie side Glenorchy
Former AFL star Jason Akermanis has signed up to play with Tasmanian club Glenorchy Magpies in 2011.
A Brownlow Medallist and three-time premiership player with the Brisbane Lions, Akermanis was sacked by the Western Bulldogs mid-season, after falling out with the club over a number of issues.
Akermanis signed with Glenorchy on Thursday, after flying to Hobart to meet with officials in September.
Glenorchy general manager Jaimes (Jaimes) Wiggins said Akermanis would be a great drawcard for the club and the Tasmanian Football League.
"We're very appreciative of what he's going to be doing for us and football in Tasmania," Wiggins told AAP.
"He has been an absolute pleasure to deal with.
"He understands where we come from and where we want to take this football club."
Wiggins said it was unclear how many games Akermanis would play during the season.
"He'll fly down Fridays and have a run with the boys," he said.
"He has every intention of looking after himself so he can have an impact on the field."
Akermanis would retain his media commitments with Melbourne radio stations SEN and MTR, he said.
