Kearney 'clear on what the Eels need'
Just two days after leading New Zealand to Four Nations victory, Parramatta coach Stephen Kearney has a clear vison for the club on his first day on the job.
It may be Kearney's first time coaching an NRL club but he has no doubt he's got what it takes.
"I think I'm very clear on what this football club needs," Kearney said at Parramatta Stadium before his first training session at the helm on Monday.
"From the very first day I made the lads aware that it was going to be tough here.
"It's about putting structures in place and abiding by those structures we put in place and I think that's going to work for us.
And while the Eels have traditionally been slow starters to the competition, Kearney is looking to make a break from history.
"I won't be looking at what's been the norm for them in the past, it's about what's important for us moving forward," he said.
"I'll be looking to breed some consistency, whether it be in training or in performance."
There's been speculation various players look set to join the Eels but Kearney wasn't giving anything away on Monday.
"I have spoken to Matty (Matt Orford) but in a month or so nothing's changed from their (English Super League club Bradford Bulls') point of view."
And as for Cowboys centre Willie Tonga joining the Eels, Kearney just laughed.
"Greg Inglis' name has come up in connection with this club too," he said.
"So I think any player that's coming off contract or are involved in any discussions about moving, Parramatta gets linked to them."
But Kearney is excited at the prospect of having Reni Maitua link up with the team midway next year, when the former Bulldog returns to the game after finishing his suspension for a two-year ban for a positive drug test to performance enhancing drug clenbuterol.
"When that comes around I'll be looking forward to it," Kearney said.
"Someone of Reni's experience, I know he's been out if the game for a while, but at that time of year he can really add something to the group."
