Van poised for historic Wallabies debut
Veteran lock Van Humphries stands on the verge of making Wallabies history, but he's still running second in the international sporting world in his own household.
The journeyman lock, who has plied his trade for clubs and provinces in Australia, Ireland, France, Italy, Japan and New Zealand, now has the chance to add other parts of the United Kingdom plus Hong Kong to his wanderings.
If he plays in any of the five Tests, 34-year-old Humphries will become the oldest Wallaby debutant ever.
Even before Thursday's selection announcement, the Reds veteran was already in celebratory mode.
His girlfriend, Australian squash representative Donna Urquhart, won a bronze medal in the women's doubles at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.
Urquhart, who suffered a loss in a bronze medal match in the mixed doubles, is the No.2-ranked female in Australia and rated 16th in the world.
Humphries wasn't able to watch Urquhart's bronze medal match as the channel wasn't available on his hotel television and he been relying on texts from her and updates from friends and family.
"She was ecstatic and I was hoping for this news (of my selection)," Humphries told reporters on Thursday.
Asked if Urquhart had raised the bar in terms of sporting achievements within their partnership, Humphries said: "Yeah definitely, she will be flashing that (medal) around the house a bit now, so hopefully I will have something to bring back from the tour and put up next to her bronze medal."
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said experience helped give Humphries the edge over the other uncapped locks, Kane Douglas and Pat O'Connor, who missed out on making the 36-man squad.
Deans is known to be a keen squash player himself, but Humphries doubted challenging his coach for a game would enhance his Test selection prospects.
"I'll have to get her (Urquhart) up to play him, because I will be no good," Humphries joked.
Neither was he about to offer his services as an opponent for Urquhart on the squash court.
"We've played a couple of times and the last time it didn't go well, so we haven't played since. There was a stray elbow and it ended up in tears she won't let me back on court," he said.
The oldest man in the Wallabies squad, Humphries said he felt fit enough to keep playing for at least another couple of years and aspired to playing the Tests, even though he is likely to be pencilled in for the two mid-week non-internationals.
