Junior Kangaroos squad picked for tour
Nineteen of the NRL's hottest prospects have been named in the ARL Junior Kangaroos squad for an upcoming two-match series against the Junior Kiwis.
Several players with first grade experience have been included, plus some of the Toyota Cup's best from the 2010 season.
The criteria for the Junior Kangaroos is that players fall in the under 20s age group and haven't played more than 50 per cent of their season's matches in the NRL.
Therefore players like Jamal Idris and Jarrod Croker weren't considered, with the tour seen more as a development experience for youngsters yet to crack a permanent start in the top grade.
Sydney Roosters utility Ben Jones, who played in the pre-season Indigenous All Stars match, Brisbane pair Gerard Beale and Corey Norman, Cronulla back Matthew Wright and Melbourne flyer Justin O'Neill have all got a substantial taste of first grade over recent seasons.
Rookie Manly winger Michael Oldfield and Toyota Cup player of the year, Brisbane's Tariq Sims, are the other notable selections.
Eleven of the 15 Australian-based NRL clubs had players selected in the squad, with those picked hoping strong performances can boost their chances of building a career in the game.
The Australians face the Junior Kiwis on October 23 in Wellington and October 30 in Rotorua.
The side will be coached by the Canberra Raiders' Toyota Cup mentor David Hamilton, who is pleased with the talent at his disposal.
"There is an abundance of talent to choose from at this level and after much deliberation at the selection table I feel we settled on a side that is capable of doing the Australian jersey proud," Hamilton said.
"There is no doubt the Kiwi side will present us with a tough challenge and considering both matches will be played in front of some huge crowds prior to Four Nations games in Wellington and Rotorua respectively, it will provide some of our guys with an amazing opportunity to shine on the international stage."
