AFL legend Ron Barassi rates Collingwood's class of 2010 as the best Magpies outfit in more than 70 years.

The Magpies have collected 14 flags in total, but Barassi says this year's minor premiers rank right up there with the club's greatest teams.

"They were a good side at the beginning (of the year) but they've just got stronger than ever," Barassi told AAP.

"They're the best Collingwood team since the 1920s and 1930s. That might sound a hell of a statement.

"But when you think back, they haven't had many great sides.

"They've won two or three premierships in that long, long period (since), but they were never a great side.

"They are the best side since those days."

Barassi's opinion is well qualified.

The 74-year-old has won an incredible 10 premierships - four as a coach and six as a player.
