Confusion reigns at Souths
Confusion reigned at South Sydney on Monday with everyone apart from winger Fetuli Talanoa aware the 23-year-old had agreed a new contract with the NRL club.
Talanoa had told AAP following a recovery session that uncertainty over his future at the club was playing on his mind as the Rabbitohs battle to keep their season alive.
The Tonga international has been one of Souths' most consistent performers since making his debut in 2006, scoring 35 tries in 80 games, but said he was unsure if a deal had been sorted or if other clubs were interested.
"I am trying not to focus too much on the contract situation I leave my manager to sort that out for me so I can concentrate fully on football," Talanoa told AAP.
"But in saying that, it is in the back of your mind that every game is a means I have to play my best to try and get a new contract."
"Souths have spoken to my manager as far as I am aware, but I haven't really heard anything more, it is a bit scary."
However, a flustered Souths chief executive Shane Richardson was adamant the Tonga international had signed a new deal on July 2.
When told Talanoa was worried about his future with the club, Richardson raged: "He has signed, I don't have time for this or you, I don't know who you are so stop wasting my time," before hanging up the phone and then refusing to return calls.
The situation was seemingly resolved by Talanoa's manager Sam Ayoub who said the 23-year had simply not had time to sign the contract, which had been agreed last month.
"He is all good, maybe he thought because he hadn't physically signed it there was a problem, but there isn't, he just needs to come into the office and sign it," Ayoub said.
