Queensland toast Origin success
Five straight Origin series losses have been painful enough for the aptly named NSW Blues.
But it may pale in comparison to the suffering to come if Maroons sponsors - brewers XXXX - keep using beer to honour the Queensland team.
The signs are ominous for NSW judging by the reaction of beaming Queensland skipper Darren Lockyer when showing off the Maroons' Origin spoils on Friday.
Lockyer certainly appeared motivated as he snapped up the first batch of limited-edition beers that will be released throughout Queensland on Monday honouring the Maroons' historic streak.
The "XXXXX Bitter" commemorative can boasts a fifth "X" on the logo to mark Queensland's record breaking Origin series run.
It is the first time XXXX have changed their logo in their 86-year history.
Restricted to 80,000 cartons state-wide, the limited edition "XXXXX Bitter" is expected to be sold out within three weeks.
In a scary thought for NSW, Lockyer joked that the can could boast 10 Xs in years to come.
"Not that I will be around then," Lockyer laughed.
But obviously beer alone will not motivate Queensland to further Origin domination - well that's the story Lockyer was sticking to on Friday.
"We will cross that bridge (extending the series wins) when we get to it - we are content with five for now and just celebrate that," Lockyer said.
"(But) every year you want to win the series.
"Whether it is six, 10 or our first one, we will be striving to win the series as much as any other."
For the record, Lockyer resisted the temptation to officially toast Queensland's success - cracking open a coldie would not have been a good look ahead of the Broncos' NRL clash with the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park on Friday night.
"It's more than 80 years since they (XXXX) changed their design, only for a limited time I know, but the Origin team would still like to say thank-you for XXXX to honour our achievements," Lockyer said.
"It does signify what this team has achieved in the Origin arena.
"I would have to put one in the fridge for later tonight."
