Origin history beckons for Buderus
He's on the verge of joining Laurie Daley as the most successful NSW captain in Origin history, but Danny Buderus says his Blues teammates must use their own place in history as motivation on Wednesday night.
Victory in Origin II at Suncorp Stadium would return the Origin shield south of the border for the first time since 2005 and hand Buderus a third series win as captain.
Only former Test skipper Daley can boast a winning record to match, having led the Blues to a hattrick of titles from 1992-94.
Buderus will lead the Blues into enemy territory for the final time on Wednesday night ahead of taking up a three-year deal to join Leeds in the English Super League.
And while the veteran of 19 Origin clashes says the match will not be about him, he has vowed to cherish his farewell to `the cauldron'.
"A packed full house against you - that's what you play Origin for, to play in these games," said Buderus, who will equal Brad Fittler's record of 14 games as captain of NSW.
"This is one I'd remember most for myself from Origin but as I've said from day one, it's not about me, it's about achieving something for NSW and our 2008 group of players.
"It's a special sort of week for myself but I can't afford to expend too much energy on that sort of stuff, it's about the team as a group."
Buderus has spoken at length of his desperation not to leave Origin on the back of three straight series defeats.
He enjoyed a glorious run when he first took over from Newcastle teammate Andrew Johns as Blues skipper with victory in the 2004 and 2005 series but it has all gone downhill since with the Maroons regaining supremacy with back to back wins.
NSW forward Willie Mason, conspicuously silent since labelling Maroons fans "nutbag rednecks" last week, said the players had spoken about `doing it for Beddsy'.
"There's a lot of reasons why we should win and that's one of them," Mason said.
"Beddsy has been a great captain for many years now and we'd love to send him out a winner.
"We are preparing like there's no tomorrow, they're going to come out with 100 times more intensity, and we're going to have to come back with the same intensity as well.
"It's got all the ingredients to be one of the best Origin games."
NSW wound up their preparations with a training run at Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday night with all 17 players getting through unscathed.
