Hawks must lift, says Bateman
Hawthorn might have steered their season back on track with seven straight wins, but they will need a lot more improvement to overpower Geelong on Saturday.
That's the opinion of midfield star Chance Bateman, who says despite their recent record the Hawks must find more to be considered a genuine title contender.
"We're still looking to improve," Bateman said.
"Even though we've got on a bit of a run and we've had some wins we still think that Geelong and St Kilda, in particular - and Collingwood - are still a fair way in front of us.
"We've got a lot of improvement to get right up there and really challenge those sides."
In fact, Bateman said a major form reversal against Geelong would be needed for success at the MCG this weekend.
"Clarko (coach Alastair Clarkson) touched on it straight after Friday night. Since the grand final we haven't beaten them so our record is not that great against them," Bateman said.
"They've had it over us since that day and we'll be looking to get one back this weekend.
"We have got close at times and we've hit the front in games in the past but haven't been able to finish the job and that's why they're such a great side because they just find a way to win."
But Bateman said the grinding three-point win over the Western Bulldogs on Friday night was perfect preparation.
"You want those really tough, tight contests because you know that's what Geelong's going to bring to the table, they are really physical, tough hard-running games," he said.
"It's a perfect lead-up against the Doggies and well be looking forward to coming up against the Cats this week."
The Hawks could be strengthened this week with hard-hitting utility Campbell Brown and defender Josh Gibson possibly available.
Gibson has made his return from a serious hamstring injury via the reserves.
"He played again in the VFL on the weekend and I've seen him this morning," Bateman said.
"He said he was travelling pretty well and he feels pretty comfortable in his body.
"I think he'll be up for selection this week."
He also said if Brown, who has had a knee problem, were fit he would walk into the side.
"I don't think he'll find it too difficult to get back into the side," Bateman said.
"As soon as his body's right and he's 100 per cent he's a pretty handy player for us so I think we can slot him straight in."
