Beams re-commits to Magpies
Young Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams has re-signed with the AFL club, denying the Gold Coast the chance to lure him back to Queensland for their debut season.
Beams, 19, has signed a two-year deal with the Magpies, which ties him to the club until the end of 2012.
Beams grew up on the Gold Coast and was recruited from local club Southport, which made him a potential target for the Gold Coast, who are set to enter the league in 2011.
Beams has played 14 games in an impressive debut season, racking up a career-best 30 disposals in last Saturday's belting of Richmond at the MCG.
He admitted he had the option of returning home to be a foundation member of the 17th club, but said his decision to re-commit was ultimately an easy one.
"I wanted to stay at Collingwood. They gave me the chance to stay here so I took it and I'm very thankful," he said.
Beams said he was unsure whether he was on the Gold Coast's radar, but had been urged by his family to stay with Collingwood.
