Kerr stars in Eagles scratch match
West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr put in a star performance while youngsters Chris Masten and Luke Shuey displayed their class as the Eagles were put through their paces in an intra-club hit-out at Subiaco Oval on Wednesday night.
But the Eagles didn't come out of the match unscathed, with Adam Selwood suffering a heavy knock to his head in a marking contest just seconds before the game finished.
Kerr, who managed just 11 games last season before a serious groin complaint ended his campaign, started slowly but blossomed in the second period, racking up a glut of possessions to cast away any doubts he could return to his ball-winning best in 2010.
Shuey, who was taken with pick No.18 in the 2008 national draft but failed to notch a game for the Eagles last year due to a succession of injuries, started on Kerr and booted the first goal of the match with a beautiful 40m drop punt off his opposite boot tucked on the boundary line.
The 19-year-old was clinical in the clinches and played out 40 minutes of the 60-minute hit-out before being rested.
Midfielder Masten also put in an eye-catching display although he sent a scare through the camp and the several thousand fans on hand when his knee twisted awkwardly in a tackle late in the game.
But the 20-year-old played out the match to allay any fears.
Nic Naitanui was a dominant figure in the ruck before playing out the match up forward while Selwood, Matt Priddis, Andrew Embley, Shannon Hurn, Ben McKinley (three goals), Ashley Hansen (two goals) and Darren Glass were others to impress.
For the record, the 'A' side, boasting the best available 22, defeated the second-tier 'B' team, which was topped up by WAFL players, 7.15 (57) to 3.3 (21).
Former Richmond forward Andrew Krakouer, who was recently released from prison after serving his time for assault, was lively throughout and kicked a goal.
Ruckman Dean Cox, Mitch Brown, Josh Kennedy, Tom Swift and Beau Waters were among a group of players unavailable for the hit-out, which consisted of three 20-minute periods.
"He looked OK I suppose, he got up so that's the main thing," Eagles assistant coach Peter Sumich said of Selwood.
"We were quite happy (with the hit-out).
"There's a few things we are still working but quite happy with the overall result and certain players got good game time in."
