Matthew Lloyd to become AFL life member
Retired Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd is one of four people who will be inducted as AFL life members next month.
Lloyd, who retired at the end of the 2009 season, automatically qualifies after reaching the 300-game mark, including pre-season and representative matches.
The other inductees will be Geelong football manager Neil Balme, former North Melbourne dual best and fairest Laurie Dwyer and Ray Allsopp, a driving force in developing football programs for primary school children.
Lloyd finished his career as the AFL's seventh highest goal-kicker, with 926 majors, heading the Bombers' goal-kicking 11 times and winning the Coleman Medal three times.
He twice topped the 100-goal mark in a season, including in 2000 when he was part of the club's premiership side.
Balme, who started his playing career with West Australian club Subiaco, played in Richmond's 1973 and 1974 premierships.
He also coached Norwood and Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, and AFL club Melbourne, before becoming football manager at Collingwood and now the Cats.
Dwyer followed his 201 games with North from 1956-70 with a large variety of off-field roles for the Kangaroos and Sydney Swans.
Long-time administrator Allsopp, who played 54 games for Richmond in the 1950s, developed a scheme of clinics for school children which has since grown to become the Auskick program, which last year had more than 160,000 participants.
