Luke Shuey's horror injury run has continued with the young West Coast midfielder forced to go under the knife for a hernia operation.

And defender Eric Mackenzie will join him on the casualty list due to a shoulder injury.

Shuey, snared with pick No.18 in last year's AFL national draft, is yet to notch a game for the Eagles after his 2009 campaign was ruined by a debilitating groin complaint followed by a fractured fibula.

The 19-year-old had been put on a specialised training program to ensure his groin problems didn't resurface.

But after starting pre-season training last week, Shuey experienced pain in the region and underwent a hernia operation on Monday.

"It looks like he might have tried to do a little too much over the break, got a bit excited," Eagles assistant coach Daniel Metropolis said.

"But it's minor surgery and we expect in two or three weeks' time he'll be ready to start and get going again.

"So disappointing for him, but we thought it was important to get it fixed now.

"(It's) not at all (related to last year's injuries), just bad luck."

Mackenzie, who played 16 games for the Eagles in 2009, has been booked in for shoulder surgery on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for a month.

But in better news, Eagles ruckman Dean Cox has responded well to treatment on his troublesome groin and is a strong chance to play in the club's NAB Cup opener against Essendon on February 12.

Midfielder Daniel Kerr, who along with Cox returned to pre-season training this week, is still in rehab for his own groin complaint but is on track to tackle the Bombers.

"He (Kerr) is doing his rehab stuff this morning," Metropolis said.

"We're progressing him slowly.

"He's done all of his program over the break and we're really happy with how he's gone.

"There's no time frame on him, we're just going to build him up and when he comes in he comes in.

"Coxy's going really well.

"He's been champing at the bit to get going.

"He's felt pretty good for a while now but we wanted to make sure we didn't have any setbacks with him."

Metropolis said the coaching staff had been pleased with the condition of the player group after their holiday break.

"They've come back in really good nick, their testing's been fantastic, and you can see an excitement about them," he said.
