Even a loss won't hurt Broncos: Hunt
Brisbane had recovered enough mentally from two months in hell to absorb a loss just a week out from their 18th straight finals campaign, according to fullback Karmichael Hunt.
AFL-bound Hunt believes Brisbane's momentum would not take a hit should their four-game winning streak end against Canberra in the last game of the 2009 regular season at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday night.
The Broncos lost seven out of eight games in a nightmare stretch, culminating in their 56-0 hammering against the Raiders on August 1, to put their finals hopes in doubt.
But they have righted the ship and Hunt believes the likes of St George Illawarra, Newcastle and Penrith have far more on the line than Brisbane.
The Dragons have slipped from the top of the ladder with three straight losses, while the Knights and Panthers play off this weekend for eighth spot.
"We want to win this weekend but if there is a minor hiccup I don't think there would be a loss of momentum," said Hunt.
"I'm not thinking negatively.
"We want to go out and win the game but for us, winning is not as important as it is for say St George or Newcastle or Penrith."
Hunt - who has signed a $3 million deal to play for the Gold Coast AFL club in 2011 - said the reality he was playing his last few games with close mate Justin Hodges and champion five-eighth Darren Lockyer was starting to sink in.
"Everyone knows the relationship I have with Justin. I'm pretty close with most of the players as well as the staff and coaches," said Hunt.
"I'm starting to reflect a bit and to realise my days playing alongside some of the boys are numbered.
"I'm happy to be playing semis and hopefully we can get through this week against Canberra and have a real good crack at the finals."
Hunt, a regular in the Brisbane line-up since making his debut at the age of 17 against the Warriors in 2004, said the Broncos would find someone to take his place at fullback.
"Everyone's replaceable," he said.
"It's great to see all these young kids getting an opportunity at such a great club where they can show off their talents."
One of those young players is 19-year-old flyer Jharal Yow Yeh, who scored a stunning 80 metre try against the Cowboys last weekend.
After showing Hunt-like fearlessness to take the cross field kick at pace, Yow Yeah swerved inside and outside behind the back of a helpless Johnathan Thurston before diving across the try line.
"He's got a lot of talent," said Hunt.
"For him to step up at this time of the year where we needed him and to show the desire he did last week to get the ball and race down the sideline was exciting.
"The Broncos are fortunate to have a lot of talent on the flanks and Jharal will be a huge bonus for the club if he hangs around here."
