Mayne still having nightmares about miss
Fremantle forward Chris Mayne is taking nothing for granted in the final few rounds of the AFL season but admits he's still having nightmares about the sitter he missed against Western Bulldogs a fortnight ago.
Mayne, who spent the first 17 rounds of the year on the sidelines battling a frustrating shin complaint, has been a standout upon his return to the Dockers' line-up.
The 20-year-old has booted seven goals in two games, including a bag of four in Sunday's upset 42-point win over Port Adelaide.
But it's the sitter he missed from 10m out running into an open goal against the Bulldogs in round 18 that's still causing him grief.
Mayne admitted he felt a nervous case of deja vu in the second term on Sunday when he received a handball from teammate Garrick Ibbotson deep in the forward line with an open goal beckoning.
"There were massive flashbacks," Mayne said with a smile.
"I already told the boys that as soon as I lost (Chad) Cornes I thought 'oh oh, here comes that again'.
"So I just thought as soon as I get it I'm going to sprint to the goal line.
"Surely I can't miss from the goal line.
"So I ran as fast as I could as soon as I grabbed it and it went through thank god."
Mayne kicked three of his four goals during the second term but felt he could have made an even bigger impact on the scoreboard.
"It probably should have been six if I could kick straight but four's good enough and I'm just happy to do my part for the team," he told the Fremantle website.
Mayne, who played 17 games in an impressive debut season last year, said he was relieved to have finally shaken off the shin complaint that delayed his start to 2009.
"It has been a tough year mentally ... but the club and all my teammates have made it real easy for me," he said.
Des Headland, another player who has endured an injury-interrupted campaign, booted three goals against the Power and Mayne said he enjoyed the on-field chemistry the pair were developing.
"It is a great feeling down there at the moment playing with Des because I had such a long time out with him," he said.
"We get on well and work well for each other.
"We are taking a lot of marks inside 50m ... it is coming down into the forward line nicely."
Greg Broughton was best afield against the Power with 37 possessions but Mayne revealed the 22-year-old defender had a hidden agenda.
"Greg Broughton had 37 (touches) and made himself captain this week in (AFL fantasy game) SuperCoach ... so he's pumped about that," Mayne said with a laugh.
"He's already told boys in the back room he's winning SuperCoach."
