Betting suspended on Hawks-Saints game
2Betting agencies have suspended their markets for Saturday's AFL blockbuster between Hawthorn and St Kilda after a plunge on the Hawks.
The heavy interest in Hawthorn came amid speculation that several key Saints, particularly captain Nick Riewoldt and Brownlow Medal contender Leigh Montagna, would miss the game.
Steven King hurt his shoulder last weekend in the one-point win over Sydney and fellow ruckman Michael Gardiner missed the game.
St Kilda are unbeaten after 18 rounds and the trip to Launceston's York Park is their last interstate trip before the finals.
A month out from the finals is also a perfect time for the Saints to put their players through a heavy training load and then freshen them up for September.
Hawthorn, the defending premiers, are one game out of the top eight and must beat the Saints to stay in the finals hunt with three more games left.
"We went off at about 2.30 today, the last bet we laid was $5000 at $3.20 on Hawthorn," said Luxbet.com marketing and media manager Steve Brassel.
"We had a tremendous amount of interest in Hawthorn that all came through around 2pm to 2.30.
"Being early in the week as well, we decided to turn it off."
He said Luxbet would most likely re-open their market for the game on Thursday afternoon, once they had more information about St Kilda's lineup.
The AFL will release the official teams late on Thursday afternoon.
