Burton a contender for Crows recall
Brett Burton is a "genuine contender" for a remarkably quick recall to Adelaide's AFL side to play Fremantle on Saturday night after a brilliant return to competitive football.
On the strength of 18 possessions and four goals for Woodville West Torrens on Sunday, Burton is being seriously considered by the Crows match committee among a number of other contenders in what looms as a fiendishly difficult selection meeting.
Captain Simon Goodwin is fit again after a knee problem, while Brent Reilly (46 SANFL touches for Sturt) and Taylor Walker (six goals for Norwood) are pushing hard for inclusion, but Burton's resumption after a knee reconstruction would be the show-stopper.
Assistant coach Mark Bickley said Burton's touch and fitness, despite not playing since he ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament against Collingwood in round 15 last year, would count in his favour.
"If you looked at Brett and you expected him to go back and play last week you might've thought he'd be pretty rusty and that might take a couple of weeks, but on the strength of his performance last week he is a genuine candidate," Bickley said on Wednesday.
"His touch was fantastic, he moved well, he pulled up really well, so he's a genuine contender for this week.
"The fitness issue is probably off the table for Brett because he's just such a meticulous person in terms of preparation.
"We've seen also he's probably been ready for two months in terms of physically being able to run and get involved in training.
"He's just been waiting for the medicos to tick off on the fact it's had that 11-month period, the recovery is there, once he's done that he's gone out and played well and gives himself a big chance."
Goodwin's recovery from a medial ligament strain has taken a fortnight longer than initially expected, but he now appears more than likely to play his 250th game at home against the Dockers.
"Goody got through the training session and looked fairly good, he's had a couple of weeks on the sidelines now so we just wanted to see how he touched the ball and he was pretty good, so his name's certainly on the table tonight," said Bickley.
"I would expect (he will play), he's the captain of our club and he was in good form before he went out of the side so he's a very strong possibility to play I'd say.
"He's had a good track record in terms of coming back from injury, we trust his judgment in terms of how his body feels and we've seen the form out on the track."
Burton and Goodwin will contend for spots in place of young talls James Sellar and Shaun McKernan and tagger Robert Shirley, while Reilly and Walker are also in with a chance.
