Wallace happy in the background
Departed Richmond coach Terry Wallace says he is very comfortable with never coaching again and will spend the coming months seeking a lower-profile job at an AFL club.
The 50-year-old, who coached the Tigers for the 99th and final time in Friday night's 24.13 (157) to 14.5 (89) loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium, said there were aspects of the role he was happy to leave behind.
"Absolutely, that's why I've been fairly strong on saying I don't think I'll coach again," Wallace said.
"No.1, I don't think the job opportunity will present itself, but I'm very, very comfortable with that.
"That's the hardest thing for a senior coach to do, is convince people that coaching's over and you're very comfortable to take a backwards seat ... and just work for a footy club."
Wallace said his immediate future involved supporting his children through midyear high school exams, as well as sounding out AFL club officials about where his career could be headed.
"I'll probably wait four or five days and then I'll start the coffee set," he said.
"What you have to do in this game is you have to find out where the landscape of the game lies at any particular time and see whether your skill set fits into any other scenarios."
On speculation that he could fit well into a football manager's position with the new Gold Coast franchise, due to enter the AFL in 2011, Wallace said he had not considered specific options yet.
"I still believe there's a lot of things I can do in footy," he said.
"I suppose the one thing that you hope from the game is that you've done a lot of good things in the game over a long period of time, you just hope that the last 10 or 12 weeks doesn't sour people's thoughts on you too much.
"It was an unsuccessful time, more of football is unsuccessful than successful, that's the nature of the business.
"Unfortunately that comes, but one thing I've tried to show people is I can dust myself off and I'm fairly resilient and I still look forward to whatever challenges present themselves for the future."
