O'Loughlin aims to make thrilling return
Veteran Swans forward Michael O'Loughlin is intent on making an instant impact as he prepares to resume his partnership with Barry Hall for the first time in almost 10 months.
O'Loughlin and Hall, presently second and fourth respectively on Sydney's all-time goalkicking list, haven't played together since round 14 last year.
The duo have accumulated over 500 games and more than 1,000 goals between them and will add some nous, height and potency to a relatively youthful forward line.
O'Loughlin, Sydney's all-time leading appearance record-holder with 286 games, has declared himself ready to make his senior return on Sunday against Richmond at the SCG.
Having missed the last two games with a groin problem, Hall ran separately at training on Wednesday, but coach Paul Roos also expects him to play against the Tigers.
Full-forward O'Loughlin, who has booted 497 goals for Sydney, missed the Swans' last eight games of 2008 with a serious ankle injury and has had a frustrating time on the sidelines.
"It's been interesting, me and the big man (Hall), I know he's been itching to get back as well," O'Loughlin said.
"The way we've played over the last couple of weeks, we've been up and down, but with him and myself back we'll hopefully provide that target down forward and can kick some goals and bring other guys into the play."
The 32-year-old O'Loughlin was optimistic he would be able to make an immediate contribution after a couple of rare appearances in the reserves.
"Playing those couple of games in the reserves I expect to come back and hopefully have an impact straight away," he said.
"I don't want to be coming in and taking a couple of weeks to find my feet.
"There will be times obviously when I'm blowing, but I want to come back and basically make an impact."
Roos believed O'Loughlin was primed to do just that, despite his lengthy layoff from senior football.
"I think his impact, while possibly not to the high quality we saw in the early stages of last year before he got injured, but I certainly think he will definitely have an impact on the game," he said.
Provided he remains fit and in form for the rest of the season, O'Loughlin will reach the 300 game mark by the end of the campaign and hinted he may play on next year.
"Last year was an okay year for me apart from injuring the ankle, those games I did okay I thought I had an impact, so if I can keep doing that, we will probably go another year," O'Loughlin said.
O'Loughlin revealed the players had talked over the last couple of days about the reason for their inconsistent start to the season.
While he didn't want to reveal much about what was said, he suggested the talk revolved around consistently re-producing the effort which has been the Swans' trademark in recent years.
Midfielder Craig Bird will miss Sunday's game with a shoulder injury.
