Payten wants more of the Tigers' wall
Now that they've proved they actually can tackle, Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten says the defensive wall put up against Melbourne on Monday night must become the norm.
The Tigers silenced Melbourne's vast array of attacking weapons with a blanket-like defence, the goal-line tackling something to behold as they repelled numerous Storm charges to hold on for a 16-6 win at Leichhardt Oval.
For a side that going into the contest had conceded 43 more points than any other side in the NRL - at an average of over 30 points a game - it was a mighty effort, even if the Storm attacking unit was way short of its best.
But now that the standard has been set, Payten said the Tigers had no excuses if they returned to their leaky ways.
"It was a good defensive display but it's one that we need week in week out," Payten said.
"We just have to turn up next week with the same attitude and drive.
"It's good to re-assure everyone that we're capable of it and what it takes to play like that.
"We'll talk about it during the week about how we did it and hope to replicate it next week."
The Tigers defence will have to be at its best at Campbelltown on Sunday with Newcastle showing over the first month of the competition that they were more than capable of putting quick points on the board.
Last weekend against St George Illawarra the Knights scored three tries in seven minutes to turn the contest on its head, halfback Jarrod Mullen's return making the attacking unit even more potent.
The Tigers celebrations continued at Tuesday's recovery session where news broke that three players - Robbie Farah, Chris Lawrence and prop Keith Galloway - had been selected in a 40-man preliminary NSW Origin squad.
