Newman urges Tigers critics to relax
Richmond captain Chris Newman has called on those criticising the club over their poor start to the AFL season to "take a deep breath and just relax".
Newman said that while speculation is swirling outside the club over the future of coach Terry Wallace after a winless first three rounds, there was no panic from within.
"We're three rounds in, I don't want to get carried away, I think everyone should just take a deep breath and just relax a little bit," Newman said on Wednesday, adding that individual players should also not be judged on three rounds.
"They're in the same boat, it's round three, players can't be on death row after round three," Newman said.
"This is a team effort, we're 0-3 at the moment just because the team's not performing, it's as simple as that."
Newman acknowledged fans had every right to be disappointed with the way the club had started the year, but there was a long way to go.
He said Sunday's clash with last year's wooden spooners Melbourne was no more significant than any other game despite the scrutiny on the club.
"There's going to always be pressure if we lose another game of football, that's just the way that it goes," he said.
"But this week we're going to be trying our best obviously and we're going to be coming out and putting our best performance out on the park and we think that our best is good enough to beat the Melbourne Football Club."
He said there was no sense among the players that they were playing for Wallace's future.
"We're always behind him, we've always got faith in him, but as I said there's no panic, there's no storm internally, there's no reason to rally around him, it's not a crisis," he said.
