Crows stay calm after win over 'Pies
With youth comes great excitement but also inconsistency.
Having enjoyed the former via a narrow round one win over finals contender Collingwood at the MCG, a refreshed Adelaide will be doing all they can to avoid the latter against St Kilda at home on Friday night.
Crows forward Jason Porplyzia, kicker of the goal that sealed victory on Saturday afternoon, admitted that the youngest Adelaide squad in years needed to be wary of a letdown against the Saints, who scrapped to a win over Sydney at Etihad Stadium.
"Possibly, but we'll safeguard against that, we've got to make sure our standards are high this week and obviously it's a short turnaround so we've got to make sure we've recovered well and prepare right for the game this week," he said on Monday.
"It's important that we back up the form we showed on the weekend, obviously it's a great start to the year, but it doesn't count for too much if we can't follow it up.
"Our first home game for the year, so we want to put on a good display for our supporters and make sure we carry on the form we had on the weekend."
To win at the MCG with such a young side, and against such a troublesome opponent, could become seen as a season and even career-shaping result for the current squad.
Yet the Saints will pose different types of questions for the Crows, as Ross Lyon's side offers hardness, skill and a knowledge of constricting tactics used expertly against the Swans and also against the Crows themselves late last season.
Adelaide's zone and counter-attack style worked brilliantly early on against the Magpies, and several observers have noted that the Crows of 2009 are doing things not dissimilar to the 2006 model which may have challenged for the premiership if not for a late-season run of injuries.
Porplyzia said the arrival of former Hawthorn assistant coach Todd Viney had done much to re-affirm what Neil Craig's match committee had attempted to implement in the past, while perhaps adding another level of sophistication to it.
"With Todd and Mark (Bickley) taking over the midfield there's some new structures that have been involved there, and we've re-jigged our zoning play a little," he said.
"Certainly (Viney has) brought across some good ideas, but also he's confirmed and substantiated what we're doing is right and confirmed that our type of play is working and just brought a few things across.
"(Zoning) was a process we were working on last year and over the pre-season this year, roles have become a bit more defined this year and guys are still working to make it happen right, we're not yet there, but we're getting there."
Adelaide's main training session will take place on Tuesday night, with Scott Thompson (hamstring) required to test his fitness.
Graham Johncock has returned from compassionate leave and will train in order to be considered for the Saints match.
