Beauxis steers Stade to win
Lionel Beauxis amassed 22 points to help Ewen McKenzie's Stade Francais to a convincing 37-15 win over Scarlets in a Pool 4 clash in the second round of European Cup.
In the same Pool 4, England scrumhalf Danny Care scored a try in a man-of-the-match performance as Harlequins beat winless Ulster 42-21, notching up a valuable bonus point in the process.
In the equally tight Pool 3, Leicester beat whipping boys Treviso 60-16 while Ospreys kept their campaign alive by eking out a hard-fought 15-9 win over Perpignan, who nonetheless picked up a point for the small loss margin.
Stade Francais, leading 9-8 at the break thanks to three Beauxis penalties, scored three converted tries in the first 13 minutes of the second-half to put the game out of sight.
"The second half wasn't at all bad," said Stade coach McKenzie. "We changed our game plan to a more direct style and it was perfect because we scored three tries straight off the bat.
"We spent the first half kicking a lot without applying enough pressure," the Australian said. "For the season ahead, it's important to have this capability to change game plan during a match."
In what was the Scarlets' ninth consecutive European Cup loss, Mark Jones scored a memorable first-half try, sprinting 45 metres to finish off a move started by the fleet-footed Morgan Stoddart on his own line, who had scampered through the Stade defence after picking up an attempted Beauxis drop goal.
Scarlets, who lost 29-22 to Harlequins in the first round of matches, were crucially denied a second try soon after when Stoddart put a foot in touch en route to touching down after twice gathering his own chip-and-chases.
Stade, who downed struggling Ulster 26-10 last weekend, opened the second period with two snap tries, winger Julien Saubade crossing in the corner after slick hands from Beauxis, and Italy captain Sergio Parisse driving his way over for a well-deserved five-pointer.
With the Scarlets defence struggling with the increasingly slick French handling, Parisse scored his second, cheekily diving over a ruck to touch down.
Replacement flyhalf Ceiron Thomas scored a late consolation try which he converted himself.
But fittingly, it was Beauxis who had the final word, charging down a Thomas chip and gathering to score a try he converted himself.
Leicester scored nine tries in their bonus-point demolition of Treviso, winger Johne Murphy notching up a hat-trick as the twice former champions kept up their unbeaten record after their 12-6 first round win over Ospreys.
Ospreys had Dan Biggar to thank for their win over Perpignan, the rookie outside-half booting five penalties to Jerome Porical's three in a disjointed, ill-tempered game littered with mistakes and fouls around the play-the-ball.
