Tupou's Rooster days end painfully
In a painful aftermath to the Sydney Roosters' disappointing exit from the NRL finals, Cronulla-bound backrower Anthony Tupou spent Friday night in hospital after suffering a bruised kidney in the loss to the New Zealand Warriors.
Tupou was rushed to an Auckland hospital when it was feared the Test forward had suffered a lacerated kidney but was discharged on Saturday morning and allowed to fly home with the rest of the team.
Had the Roosters still been alive in the competition Tupou would not have played any further part, but club doctor John Orchard said he would be right to play in the end of season World Cup if selected in the Australian squad.
"It's still not 100 per cent by any means ... he might be okay for (the World Cup), I think it's about four or five weeks away so he might be okay," Orchard said.
"He stayed overnight in hospital but it was safe for him to fly back on Saturday.
"It was very close to (being lacerated) but fortunately it wasn't that severe, it was pretty close, he was pretty unwell last night."
Orchard praised Tupou's courage in what turned out to be his last game for the club before joining the Sharks on a four-year deal starting next season.
"He thinks it happened just before halftime, he played the second half with it," Orchard said.
"He thought he might have just had bruised ribs, but when he came off the field we suspected it might have been the kidney so we took him to hospital for scans.
"We were very short on the bench, a few guys stayed on that would have come off in other weeks."
