Wallabies selection never easy: Hynes
Wallabies new-boy Peter Hynes is embracing the pressure to hang onto his spot with a queue of big-name wingers behind him.
The Queenslander impressed in his Test debut against Ireland, so much so that he will again keep Adam Ashley-Cooper and Ryan Cross on the bench for Saturday's Test against France while Drew Mitchell, Lachie Turner, Timana Tahu, Mark Gerrard and Digby Ioane turn out for Australia A against Fiji.
If that's not enough, Wallabies coach Robbie Deans this week warned all of his players they risked being dropped if they didn't perform.
"You're always under pressure to perform, whether it's for your state, club, wherever, especially here," Hynes said.
"We're always under pressure and you've got to expect that and I guess embrace it."
So is he worried about the list of household names he's keeping out?
"No, not really," he said.
"I go out there to play for myself and for my country and play well.
"I guess they're doing the same thing. They're trying to get in the team and I'm trying to stay here so I guess the pressure's always on and I'm just going out there and going to do what I do."
But Hynes said the constant attention meant he was far from feeling relaxed and comfortable in his new job.
"I don't think you can ever be comfortable," he said.
"There's always people wanting to be here and I'm thrilled to be here at this stage and I'm just going to go out there and play well, as well as I can."
The Wallabies admit to being in the dark about many members of the French squad with the country's top four domestic sides still contesting a finals series.
Asked what he knew about the man he will mark at ANZ Stadium, Hynes replied: "I've just read a quick report on him. I forget his name. From what I hear he's pretty quick, pretty agile and a pretty handy player so I'll be watching him carefully."
Hynes will be watching 24-year-old, twice capped Benjamin Thiery.
"I believe you can do too much homework," Hynes said.
"A lot of it's just spur of the moment and you just read what's in front of you and I'm going to go into this game with that sort of mindset."
Like wing partner Lote Tuqiri, Hynes has been granted a roving commission by coach Deans.
"We've got no restrictions on where we can go and what we can do so I want to be roving a fair bit too," he said.
"It's I guess the good thing about being a winger, you can do that.
"You can get off your wing and pop up anywhere so I'll look to do that this week and hopefully get some more touches."
