Sheridan ruled out of All Blacks Test
England prop Andrew Sheridan has been ruled out of Saturday's second rugby Test against the All Blacks in Christchurch, prompting team management to summon a replacement from the United States.
Sheridan needed 12 stitches to close a gash under his left eyebrow sustained during the second half of New Zealand's 37-20 victory at Eden Park last Saturday night.
England's premier front-rower was apparently struck by the boot of team-mate Lee Mears in a tackle and will be out of action for at least a fortnight - ending his season a game prematurely.
"I'm obviously disappointed to get the news but I've got to follow medical advice," the 25-Test veteran said.
England's caretaker manager Rob Andrew said Newcastle Falcons prop David Wilson would arrive in Christchurch early on Tuesday as cover.
Tim Payne from the English Premiership-winning London Wasps is expected to replace Sheridan on the loosehead side when England name their 22-man squad on Tuesday.
The unfavourable medical report ends a disappointing tour for Sheridan, who was yellow carded for a ruck infringement in the 33rd minute before leaving the field permanently half an hour later.
England summoned Wilson from the England Saxons squad contesting the Churchill Cup in Chicago.
Matt Stevens started at tighthead last weekend while Jason Hobson is the other prop in the original tour party.
Andrew said the uncapped Wilson was rushed south in case another front-rower broke down in training before Saturday's Test at AMI Stadium.
