Queensland enforcer Neville Costigan has 40 minutes to make a late bid for State of Origin selection in Canberra's clash against the Sydney Roosters this Saturday.

The bustling backrower must impress selectors against the highly-rated Roosters pack at the Sydney Football Stadium before the Maroons team for Origin I is named next Tuesday.

The 23-year-old's season has been thwarted by a nasty quadriceps injury and Raiders coach Neil Henry said Costigan would add some firepower to his team's forward pack.

"He gives a bit more punch out there; he's good in attack and gives us some versatility with (Marshall) Chalk on the bench as he can play out on the edge or outside backs," said Henry.

"He's trained well and I think our bench has got some good minutes in them anyway, we'll probably run him on at 20 minutes a time and get a solid 40 minutes from him."

Costigan, 23, had a breakthrough season last year, resulting in him playing two Origin matches in Queensland's 2-1 series win over NSW.

But he has not played since Canberra's round one loss to the Knights at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Maroons have a smorgasbord of form backrowers to call upon for the opening Origin clash in Sydney on May 21 and the 181cm and 100kg Costigan must make an immediate impact.

In other team news, Newcastle will be bolstered for Monday night's clash against premiers Melbourne at Olympic Park with star forwards Steve Simpson and Danny Buderus named to play.

Simpson has shaken off a knee injury to play his first game since round one while Buderus missed last Saturday's 13-12 home win over the high-flying Gold Coast Titans.

The Knights will take on a Storm team with eight players backing up from Friday's Centenary Test at the SCG.

Parramatta welcome back hulking centre Ben Smith for his first game of the season in Sunday's match against St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium.

Smith is expected to add some starch to his side's defence in his first senior outing since off-season knee and shoulder reconstructions.

"Ben brings a lot to the table in defence and attack and we're very glad to have him back," Eels coach Michael Hagan said.

"He's worked incredibly hard to get to this stage and has had to overcome a number of setbacks, which is a testament to his strength and work ethic.

"I have no doubt we're yet to see the best of Ben Smith and I'm looking forward to what he has to offer the team for the remainder of the season."

Wayward Bulldogs backrower Reni Maitua is set to return for Saturday's match against Penrith at ANZ Stadium, his first outing since being dumped after round two.

The ill-disciplined Maitua was slated to return earlier but was thwarted by a rib injury.

The 25-year-old was expected to leave the `Dogs following a long list of off-field indiscretions but the club said last month he would be not be granted an early release from his contract.

The Sharks have named Brett Kimmorley for Saturday's clash with North Queensland in Townsville despite the halfback's future at the club being up in the air.
